Recent research is now suggesting that fast eating (less than 5 minutes per meal) may lead to overweight/obesity, type 2 diabetes, nausea/vomiting, gastritis, indigestion and heartburn.

It takes approximately 20 minutes for the stomach to alert the brain of its fullness. Fast eating leads to overeating which causes the stomach to be exposed to gastric acid for a longer period which increases the risk of gastritis, heartburn and gastric ulcer. There is also a possibility of a slower gastric emptying which leads to a larger quantity of food in the stomach causing nausea/vomiting.

Fast eating may cause dysregulation of glucose metabolism with a higher glucose spike and eventual insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes. When you eat slowly, you are more likely to feel full while consuming fewer calories.

Adequate chewing also slows down meal time, allows better digestion and makes the food tastier (sweeter). Try to allow yourself more than 15 minutes per meal if possible.
