“Yesterday is history. Tomorrow is a mystery. Today is a gift—that’s why it’s called the present.” There’s something especially meaningful about this quote when we think about our health. We often live somewhere other than today. We look backward and regret the choices we made, or we look forward and worry and be anxious about what might happen to our health as we get older. But neither yesterday nor tomorrow is where change actually happens. Change happens today.
Maybe you didn’t eat the way you wanted to yesterday. Maybe you missed your workout, stayed up too late, or allowed stress to take over your day. That doesn’t mean you’ve failed. Yesterday can be a teacher, but it doesn’t have to become a sentence.
And tomorrow deserves our attention, but not our constant anxiety. We can make plans, set goals and take steps to protect our future health, but we can never completely control what tomorrow brings.
Today is different. Today gives us an opportunity. One healthy meal matters. One walk matters. Getting outside matters. Taking a few minutes to breathe(my favorite is the 4-7-8 breathing technique), slow down and reconnect with yourself matters. Going to bed a little earlier matters. So does noticing how your body feels instead of constantly pushing through it. Yes, actually listening to our body!
Functional wellness isn’t about chasing perfection. It’s about becoming more aware of the small choices that, repeated consistently, shape how we feel and function over time. I believe in all aspects of life, especially on our wellness journey, progress is more important than perfection and consistency is more important than intensity.
So perhaps the question isn’t, “What should I have done differently?” And it isn’t, “What will happen to me?”
Maybe the better question is simply:
What can I do for my health today?”
Because yesterday is gone. Tomorrow isn’t promised. But today is here—and it’s a gift.
