What if the belief that something is wrong with you is actually getting in the way of change? So many of us approach our health from a place of self-criticism. We tell ourselves we have no willpower, we eat the wrong foods, we can’t control our cravings, or our body is somehow failing us. Over time, these thoughts can become part of our identity. We stop seeing our behaviors as something we can understand and change, and start seeing them as evidence that something is wrong with us.

But what if we looked at ourselves differently? What if instead of asking, “What’s wrong with me?” we asked, “What is my body trying to tell me?” A craving, a symptom, emotional eating, or difficulty changing a habit may be an invitation to become curious rather than an opportunity to criticize ourselves. That is a growth mindset approach.

In functional wellness, we look beyond the symptom to explore the many factors that may be influencing health and we recognize that our relationship with food is shaped by far more than nutrition. Our emotions, beliefs, experiences, stress, and the way we speak to ourselves all matter.

This doesn’t mean we shouldn’t change. It means we can change from a completely different place. Instead of trying to punish ourselves into better health, we can begin by understanding ourselves. Instead of shame, we can choose curiosity. Instead of believing we are broken, we can recognize that our body may be communicating something that deserves our attention.

Sometimes the most powerful transformation begins when we stop trying to fix who we are and start listening to what we need. Change only happens when we love ourselves.

You are not broken. You may simply be ready to understand yourself in a new way.
